Roller experiment

In Science we have started our unit on Wheels and Levers. Today we created a Venn diagram comparing wheels to rollers. We also did an experiment with rollers to see how we could reduce our work load and reduce the amount of friction. We concluded that pushing a student across the floor was a lot of work and created a lot of friction. Using the rollers reduced this and made our job easier. We also predicted that using wheels with an axle would make our work even easier.

Friction!
Rollers sure do make our job easier!

Division and other such things!

We have been working hard in 4C to improve our speed and accuracy in multiplication and division. We have used many different strategies to help us learn and apply our skills. We have grouped, used arrays, used number lines etc! Below the students are practicing their division using manipulatives to group and build arrays.

Anyone feeling like this?!

With the fluctuating weather and the wind, please ensure that your child brings ski pants for recess time, along with their mitts and tuques!   It makes recess, especially at lunch time, much more enjoyable!

Studying for Science

Students wrote down a list of questions from our study guides to ask one another. After 1 min of asking back and forth, we would freeze and switch partners. This allowed the students to work with a variety of people in the class, including people they may not normally choose to work with. I am confident that the students will do well on their test tomorrow.

HINT: The difference between convex and concave lenses, is that the convex lens magnifies things while the concave lens reduces the image.

Writing Traits - DETAILS!

In Language Arts we are focusing on the 6 Traits of writing. This month we have focused on Ideas/Details. Today in partners, the students were given an object to write about. Using the yellow detail cube they wrote a descriptive paragraph. The detail cube included sides such as:

1. Tell WHY you need the item
2. Describe the parts or components of the item
3. Describe the sound, smell, and taste of the item

MONDAY the 10th

There will be no school busses running on Monday, January 10th.  As a result, swimming lessons will not begin this week.   Schools are still open.   Please drive safe out there, and ensure that your children are dressed for the weather.
