How do I study for my 1st quiz?

Science Quiz - moved to Friday

How do I study?

*Draw pictures of the 3 types of levers and label where the fulcrum, effort and load are.

*Draw examples from the sheet we did in class with different objects.   Label the fulcrum, effort and load, and say whether or not it's a 1st, 2nd or 3rd class lever.  Check your answer with the sheet we did.

*Memorize - 1st class lever, the fulcrum is ALWAYS in the middle.
-2nd class lever, the load is in the middle.
-3rd class lever, the effort is in the middle.

SCISSORS - the fulcrum is the screw in the MIDDLE... load is what it is cutting, and the effort coming from the hands closing the handles.  ---- 1st class lever
FISHING ROD - Fulcrum in the handle end of the rod... the effort in the middle of the rod and the load on the end where the fish is caught. ------------- 3rd class lever.
NUT CRACKER - Fulcrum is at this left hand end where the screw is.  The load is the nut in the middle and the effort on the end with the handles.   ----------------- 2nd class lever.

A lever is an arm which tilts around the fulcrum ( a pivot) to provide useful motion.   Levers make work easier because they amplify force, or change the direction of the force or magnify the distance an object is moved.  A lever is a simple machine that makes work easier.  It can aid in moving, lifting, etc.

Analyzing!

Today, we have been analyzing non-fiction text.  We looked at a brochure, that included a map of Canada, pictures, captions, many different headings, and information such as Coat of Arms, Provincial Flowers and Animals etc.  The students worked very well in their groups, discussing and analyzing as they searched for new information.

These students were excited to find, CAMPBELL RIVER!

BAT CAVE

Every year, Mr. Deverdenne, another Grade 4 teacher, creates a bat cave!  This year, it will be on the front bulletin boards across from the office.  It should be up next week sometime!   Come in and check it out.  We will be painting bats as well to place in the CAVE!  This was all Grade 4 classes... over 50 students painting in the hallway on a Friday afternoon!  Call us CRAZY! :-)

Wednesday's Photography

Dawn was the proud spender of her $25 today!  It's fun to watch the students... will they save their money or will they spend it??!!    It takes awhile to earn $25!   Here are a few of Dawn's pictures from our early dismissal day.  ENJOY!   I hope that these pictures inspire conversation between you and your child.  Ask them what they were learning at the time!
