Reading to Grade 1

Today we shared the books we had created with Mrs. Huber's Grade 1 class.  It was fun to practice our reading fluency, thinking about how we would read our story to a Grade 1 student.   The Grade 1's enjoyed these funny stories too!

Daily 5

We are back into Daily 5... Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work and Listen to Reading... all fundamentals of our Language Arts program.  Here's some of the kids in action!

Editing Skills

Here students are using sentence strips that are full of mistakes.  They are finding the mistakes and correcting them using their editing skills.  We use GREEN for capital letters, RED for punctuation and BLUE for spelling.  We will present our skills to the class.

Assessment

In order to help students become accountable for their work, and to be proud of what they do, I'm sending home the rubric for your child's story that they wrote just before Christmas holidays.   We read this book  as a class, and then the students had to "copy" the format, and create their own story full of rhymes and such.  They created a book and illustrated their story as well.
Now... we're asking for your help!   Please, sit down with your child. Have them read the story to you, and as you inspect their book, fill out the rubric that was sent home.   Please discuss with your child what you felt they did well, and what they could do better.   Please write a few comments about your discussion on the lines provided.
Having your child see you interested in their work will certainly inspire them to do better here at school.   I think a few students felt sick to know that mom or dad was going to be reading their story!  I'm curious!!!  :-)

THANK YOU!

2013

Welcome back!!  I can not believe how quickly Christmas holidays went!  I hope that you all had a relaxing time and were able to enjoy time with friends and family.   I ate too much, read a lot of books and slept lots.  It was a nice break.  Our kids had fun skiing and playing with a few new toys.  It was special to spend time with my Grandma who came up to see us from Colorado.
Now... it's time to hit the books!  I was in to school over the holidays and got our next Science unit all ready!  Spelling units are ready and so are basic facts!!   We'll be starting right into it on Monday morning!

I hope you are all ready!  I know that I'll be in bed early tonight in anticipation for tomorrow!  See you all soon!
